Toronto is home to the largest Filipino community in Canada. More than 270,000 City residents are of Filipino origin. The Filipino community has a significant population in Scarborough and is currently underserved by cultural community facilities and dedicated spaces to support its large and growing population. Filipino Torontonians are actively engaged in discussions to create a permanent Filipino cultural and community centre to serve the community’s needs and celebrate the community’s rich culture. This motion asks City of Toronto staff to explore the possibility of replicating the successful models of the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, and the Tamil Community Centre to support the development of a dedicated community centre for the Filipino community in Scarborough.

People of Caribbean origin are a formative component to the success and definition of both Toronto and Canada. Today, more than 315,000 Torontonians of Caribbean heritage contribute immensely to the city’s economic, social, political, and cultural composition. One of the largest festivals in Canada, the historic Toronto Caribbean Carnival has grown into North America’s largest Caribbean events. With close to sixty years of bringing Caribbean vibrancy to Toronto’s downtown core, this marquee event draws more than 2 million visitors annually, injecting between $467 million and $532 million into the local economy while cementing itself as a vital piece of Toronto's cultural identity. It is also the pillar of several affiliate events throughout the summer that demonstrate the strength of Toronto’s Caribbean community. Caribbean-owned businesses have driven local economic growth for decades, anchoring prominent cultural hubs like Little Jamaica along Eglinton Avenue West, as well as neighborhoods across Scarborough and the city. At the same time, Caribbean Canadians enrich the broader community as entrepreneurs and essential workers across every major industry,…

Torontonians are struggling with rising costs, making tough choices to make ends meet. At the same time, big tech and retail giants are capitalizing by monitoring our activity and using the information to extract maximum profit. Surveillance pricing – also known as algorithmic personalized pricing – uses your personal data to change the price of groceries and other items. The goal is simple: to charge the customer as much as possible using personal data to determine what each individual will pay. That means the shelf price of an item can change based on who you are, where you are, or what time it is. Manitoba introduced legislation to ban this practice. Recently, the federal government committed to explore strengthening privacy protections against this as part of the federal Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategy. The City of Toronto is taking action to reduce costs for people, especially when it comes to groceries. We’ve expanded school food programs to reach every student by this fall, saving families with two children $900 a year off their grocery bill. In March, Council passed a motion directing City staff to explore municipal levers to bring grocery costs dow…
