Using the weather widget for canvassing days

The weather widget lives at the top of your Field Ops dashboard (Field Ops → Dashboard tab). It gives you a live read on conditions before you send canvassers out the door.

What it shows

  • **Current temperature and condition** — pulled from your device's location in real time
  • **Rain probability** — the chance of precipitation in the current hour
  • **Canvassing readiness badge** — green "Good for canvassing" when skies are clear and rain probability is under 30%; amber "Check conditions" when it's not
  • **3-day forecast** — click the widget to expand. See high/low temperatures and rain probability for each of the next three days
  • How it works

The widget uses your browser's location (it will ask permission the first time). It calls Open-Meteo, a free public weather API — no API key required, no cost to Poll City.

If you decline location access, the widget quietly hides itself. Nothing breaks.

How to use it on a canvass day

  • Open Field Ops before your morning briefing
  • Check the badge — green means send people out on schedule
  • If amber, expand the 3-day view and decide whether to push the shift to a better day
  • Share what you see with your volunteers at the morning standup
  • Rain kills door rate. A team that walks in a downpour covers half as many doors and knocks them 20% less confidently. Use this to make the call before your volunteers are already in the field.
